Trademark vs Registered Trademark?

You are correct. You can add the "tm" symbol and it does give you a level of protection but full protection comes when you actually file. Anyone that sees that symbol will not know if you have filed or not without doing a search and if they go to that extent you may offer to sell the symbol to them.
