I have a vintage 1940's handbag that looks like alligator, does anyone know about these things?

I am selling it on ebay, and my grandmother called it her alligator bag. I received a question on ebay and they wanted to know if the scales were lifted. It doesn't seem to have scales. So what could the material be? Did they make synthetic alligator in the 40's?
